bought a giant chocolate cake today
in celebration
feels like my birthday
though far from it
my life is changing
becoming my own
despite the relentless iraq attack
and the deafening deficit
and the inmates running the asylum
and the lack of compassion
and the constant hatehatehate
and the greed
there's also chocolate cake
and other wonders
like sunshine
and pumpkins
and cats curled on laps
there's smooches
and hugs
and crickets chirping
so hope, really
